The Hochschule für Musik Mainz is uniquely tied to the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, which, with over 37000 students, makes Mainz one of the largest German university towns. Almost every fifth person in Mainz is a student, keeping the city young and vibrant! However, Mainz is the oldest city in the Rhein-Main area and is presently rapidly becoming one of the most popular places to live in Germany.
The Hochschule shares some of the same traits as the city, modestly down to earth in character and in size. The students receive personal attention. The top talent are busy, getting a broad musical hands-on experience in Baroque performance practice, new music language, recording, chamber ensembles, large ensembles, solo performance, and pedagogy. Very rarely in the world do students receive the high level of training in all aspects of musicianship as at the Mainz Hochschule. Students’ practical musicianship skills are furthered through various collaborations with the Barock Vokal (Andreas Scholl, Ton Koopman, etc.) Mainz Staatsorchester, the Mainz Theater, Mainzer Virtuosi, Neumeyer Consort, the MING Connection Mainz e.V.
The Hochschule’s proximity to Frankfurt and Hahn airports make travel in and out of Mainz very easy. Its temperate oceanic climate is comfortable. Mainz is a bright, down to earth, attractive place for students, large enough to be called a city but not too expansive to feel lost in. Mainz is advantageously located near renowned international concert venues such as the Kronberg Academy, Frankfurt's Alte Oper, Wiesbaden's Kurhaus, Aschaffenberg Bach Festival, Rheingau Musik Festival, Heidelberger Fruehling, and Schwetzinger Festspiele. It is home to the Villa Musica, SWR2 Internationale Pianisten in Mainz, Mainzer Musiksommer, as well as Schott Musik Publishers.
